Winning the Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery

Your winning ticket to become a citizen of the United States

Have you ever heard an immigrant or recently naturalized citizen in your community talking about how he or she “won the lottery?” While this lottery isn’t the monetary kind, in many ways it matters more.

The lottery they’re speaking of is the United States Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery (DV Lottery) – also known as the Green Card Lottery – a government-sponsored program that offers incoming immigrants the life-altering chance to become a legal U.S. citizen.

This program is closing soon! So, if you or a friend or family member are interested in entering, act fast! This lottery will close on November 10th, 2020. No late entries will be accepted. Foreign nationals can sign up and submit their electronic entry at https://dvprogram.state.gov.

This free, congressionally mandated program was created to promote immigration from specific countries with historically low rates of immigration into the United States. Millions will enter to win the 2022 Visa Lottery for a free green card. Still, only 55,000 total foreigners will ‘win’ out of the estimated 10-12 million people who enter this program worldwide.

There is a limited period of time that one can register for the Visa Lottery Program, which takes place each fiscal year. Participation is simple and free. There is no cost to register for the DV Program. The law allows only one entry for each person during each registration period. If you submit more than one entry, you will be disqualified.

Applicants must meet two requirements in order to participate:

  1. Be born in qualifying countries, and
  2. Have at least a high school diploma or two years of work experience.

People who already live in the United States with a legal non-immigration status can also participate, provided that they are eligible and meet the qualifications.

LegalBreeze tip: After you submit a complete entry, you will see a confirmation screen containing your name and a unique confirmation number. Print this confirmation screen and retain your confirmation number for your records, as it’s the only way you can check the status of your entry, and you will need it to obtain further instructions or schedule an interview for a visa if you are selected.
